For special gatherings, it is widely believed that the lion dance will bring good fortune, happiness, success, and prosperity to the place, people, and business at hand. Depending on the purpose of the gathering, two skillful dancers in each lion can animate the lion to both entertain and tell a story as it carries out its job to drive away bad karma.
The lion will also eat oranges and lettuce to represent good luck and wealth, and can share these blessings with the crowd! Photo credit: Greg Cook.
Grandmaster Chan Pui has created a strong legacy to promote, honor, and celebrate Chinese martial arts through the performances of Wah Lum Kung Fu. We demonstrate a variety of dynamic kung fu and tai chi skillsβempty hand forms, weaponry, and fighting setsβto share about what kung fu really meansβtraditions with passionate, fun, hard work. We have performed kung fu and tai chi at: community events , museums, temples, schools, cultural festivals , and more. Photo credit: Lee-Daniel Tran. One traditional aspect of Chinese culture is the dragon dance.
Chinese dragons are regarded as powerful, auspicious creatures that symbolize strength and good luck. Unlike lion dances, in which performers are hidden, the dragon is held up by poles which are used to manipulate the body of the dragon for animated motions and artful tricks. A dragon dance requires a large team β ten dancers to operate one dragon! We have performed dragon dance at: Lunar New Year celebrations , half-time shows , anniversaries, banquets, parades, outdoor festivals, and more.
